The Faculty of Science’s organisational structure consists of two schools, two research institutes, administrative services and technical services. Technical Services provides technical expertise and support for the teaching and research endeavours of the Faculty. It is comprised of scientific discipline-based team that are responsible for running undergraduate practical classes, as well as providing technical support to research academics and students. An opportunity has arisen for a Scientific Officer (Physics) to join the team on a part-time basis.
The Scientific Officer provides specialised technical expertise to the Faculty of Science to achieve its research objectives. The role determines the appropriate use of established methods, tasks and sequences in the use of specialised equipment, as relevant to the discipline area. The position plays an important role in providing high-level technical support for research, as relevant to the discipline area.
About the role:
- Responsibility for the day-to-day technical aspects of supporting a research laboratory to meet research needs
- Ensuring efficient and cost effective use of equipment and instrumentation to meet research needs within resources
- Providing basic and advanced technical training for researchers, external clients, postgraduate & undergraduate students on specialised equipment and procedures
- Maintaining technical resources via the Online Booking System including specialised computing infrastructure, scientific equipment and software. This includes the tracking of all users, maintenance and usage online
- Undertaking complex risk assessments and developing a working knowledge of relevant University policy under the broad direction of the Technical Services Manager (Discipline)

1.Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team including ability to respond to changing circumstances and critical situations and provide leadership within group
2.People leadership skills, such as guiding, coordinating, influencing and mentoring others
3.Understanding and application of Work Health & Safety, and Equity & Diversity principles and policies
4.Specialised knowledge and understanding of sophisticated experimental techniques and protocols, as relevant to the discipline area – in this case at least one of the following; magnetron sputtering and vacuum coating systems, tube furnaces, nanophotonics, and optical spectroscopy
5.Experience in providing informed advice on research issues and application of technical functionality to solve complex problems
Base Salary Range: $91,873 to $101,633 pa (HEW 7 – pro-rated)
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is part-time (3 days per week – 0.6 FTE) and appointment will be made on a continuing basis
